Comparison

Implant vs IUD

Editorially reviewed on October 29, 2026. [TODO: medical reviewer]

Quick answer

Both are among the most effective methods, with fewer than 1 in 100 users pregnant a year.[src] The implant sits under the skin of your arm for 3 years; an IUD sits in the uterus for about 5 (hormonal) to 10 (copper) years.

The difference, explained

These are the two long-acting reversible methods. The implant is inserted in a few minutes under local anaesthetic in the upper arm. An IUD is placed through the cervix after the provider measures the uterus; insertion is usually brief but crampy.

Bleeding differs most. The implant often causes irregular or no bleeding. A copper IUD contains no hormones and keeps your cycle, but periods can get heavier and crampier at first. A hormonal IUD usually makes periods lighter. A copper IUD is also the most effective emergency option when fitted within 5 days of unprotected sex.[src]

Both are free at many public facilities and suitable whether or not you have had children.[src] Private prices: implant about ₱5,000, copper IUD ₱10,000 to ₱20,000.

Which may suit you

  • Implant may suit you if: You prefer nothing inside the uterus and a quick arm procedure.
  • IUD may suit you if: You want the longest protection, or no hormones (copper).
